Lavey Parish Townlands
Townlands extracted from Lavey Parish baptism records
The parish baptism records from the 1800s to the 1980s generally recorded the address of a child's parents but not all. The details of the available addresses have been put in the table below, in the first/left hand column. The older parish baptism records contained usually a single name address. The names seem to be townlands or part of a townland (Sub Townland). Mayogall, Dreenan, Drumard and Rocktown were very common addresses. In some cases people were baptised who were not from Lavey Parish.
I retained the original spellings in the baptism records. Spellings varied and I had to use some discretion. Parishioners some of, may God have mercy on them, may not have been able to spell or were unclear as to their exact townland address. For example Culeer varied as Culiar, Culier, Culleir and Cullier which is apparently part of the townland of Carnamen and is spelt Cullear. Slatabogie is spelt Slaghtybogy on the townlands website and 13 records exist on parish baptism book. Mayogall was spelt as Moyagall and 528 records exist for this period.
Knockloghrim or knockloughrim does not register as a townland but has 86 records using this address. There seems to be a confluence here of townlands according to the Irish townlands website like Cabragh, Rocktown, Drumard, Gulladuff, Ballynacross and Derganah.
Single word addresses gradually faded out and were replaced with modern house numbers with postcodes but some still contain old townland names.
The table below where possible, contains townland hyperlinks to the excellent Irish Townlands website and shows townland boundaries on a modern mapping interface, OpenStreetMap. The Parish map's (above) townland names are in the second column in the table below.
The townlands on the above graphic were collected by a local group. I had the loan of a parish map briefly but did not manage to photograph it properly.
There is a slight variation in the two columns or townland listings below since i have retained names which are probably not townlands but part of a townland. I also so far, cannot find some places on the Irish Townlands site which may indicate the are not townlands. I will leave this for others to investigate and research.
